We make not bone here at we believe that there is a God and he has created everything as shown to us by the creation account in Genesis. But we live a world that is so filled with our own hubris that we discount the hand of the creator and think that we know everything that there is to know and that we can control everything that we touch. This includes the very planet upon which we live. But the reality is that we know very little and about a great deal and we control even less of creation than we believe even though we have created some pretty mighty things and learned a lot about the world in which we live.

Now the point of this and hopefully several other related posts is to highlight how really awesome creation is and how we have very little to do with it in terms of its creation and controlling it and yet, it still speaks to the Glory of God and his hand at work. So today I would like us to consider for a moment the core of the earth. It is not something that we often times think about. But the planet Earth is even without all the creatures and plants on it a truly awesome thing.

The diameter of the Earth at the equator, which would be its widest point is about 7900 miles. Which means that the center of the earth is about 3900 miles from the surface of the earth at the equator. Now the Earth is made up of very distinct layers. We live on the crust, below us is the rigid mantle, below that is the Soft mantle. Below that is the lower mantle. Then you have the outer core which is liquid and then at the very center of that is the solid core of the planet.

Now we have not sampled all these layers, but by the study of seismology, math and other means, we have figured out a lot about the planet upon which we live to be certain that these things do exist. Now here is one of the more remarkable things. That the center of the earth is about 9800 degrees Fahrenheit. Which makes it pretty close to the same temperature as the surface of the sun. The Core maintains this temperature due to the pressure exerted upon it by the outer layers of the earth.

Think about this, the deepest mine in the world is the Mponeng Gold Mine in South Africa reaching a depth of 2.5 miles down. To travel from the surface to the bottom takes 1 hour and once you get there, the temperature of the mine is about 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Now all this is not to show some great scientific knowledge on my part, but to show that the earth is remarkable. Now think further about this. As hot as the center of the earth is, it is the perfect temperature to support life on it. In fact, the earth will eventually cool and become a lifeless rock in space. But that will not be, before our sun turns into a Red Giant and expands to engulf the earth destroying it, billions and billions of years from now.

Creation is remarkable. Now if we go back to the creation account in Genesis 1:9–10, we find the following:

[9] And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. [10] God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. (ESV)

So not only did God create the earth, he build it such a way to Perfectly suit life and to allow it to flourish. But look at the complexity of the core of the Earth and some would simply look at it and say that it all happened by happenstance. Simply there was a great explosion and everything collided into what it is now and compressed into the chunk of rock that we are currently stand on. One in billions chance that everything came together in this spot and put all the pieces together perfectly.

Or is it that this is all a part of some greater design? That there is a God and he built the world to be just as it is, with a core, and all the layers and the crust and everything just right to support live, Human life. Even something as seemingly unworthy of thought and consideration as the layers of the Earth from it core to the surface are, this too is a reminder that the universe and everything in it is a wonder and speaks to us about God as we are reminded in Psalm 19:1

[1] The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (ESV)

Or in this case, simply how the Earth is put together speaks of the might and power of God and his plan in and for creation. But it is also a reminder that even as God planned and built the Earth for us who live on it, he also has a plan to redeem us from our sins and that is through the person and work of Jesus Christ. Who by his life, death and resurrection has brought us out of the darkness and death for our sins, but into the light of salvation from those sins. Simply my placing our faith in Christ and repenting of our sins, we are taken out of the condemnation that we are due for our sins and given mercy and grace by God, through Christ. God in his creation has literally planned everything and no detail has gone left undone by Him. To God be the Glory forever and ever!
