Happy Thanksgiving!

Today we take a bit of time out of the year to be thankful. Thankful as individuals. Thankful as a people (Americans). Thankful as a people of God. We are reminded in Psalm 107:1 of three key things. “[1] Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” The first is that we are to give thanks to God for all things that he has done. All that we have is the doing of God and we are to be thankful to him.

But as we give thanks to God for what he has done; here in the Psalm we are to given two key reasons for giving thanks. The first is because God is good and he is good all the time. No matter what times and circumstance we find ourselves in, there is never a time when God is not good. Secondly, we are to give thanks because the love of God is without end. Just as God is always good, he never stops loving his people. But sometimes in life it does might not seem that way. Things do not go the way we want or the direction we want or sometimes bad things just happen. It can be hard sometimes to be thankful for anything at all; much less big things or little things. Being thankful leads to gratitude which in turns leads to peace. But only when we realize that the source of all things is God and that salvation is found in Jesus Christ.

This is why even in times of difficulty, we can be thankful for the little things. Including seemingly small things like the fact that God is good and His love is without end. Because we see the extent of his love in the actions of His only Son, Jesus Christ who came and died for our sins, took upon himself the very wrath of God; so that we can have in him: salvation, redemption and deliverance. But most of all through Christ and Christ alone, we have eternal life instead of judgment and condemnation. Which might seem like a small thing in the scope of our problems.

But in the end, it is something hugely to be thankful for. So spend some time today being thankful for the little things. Because the little things can really turn out to be big things to be thankful for after all.
